Parfum/Fragrance on the INCI list of a cosmetic product is used so that the end product smells a certain way. Fragrance in the US and parfum in the EU is a generic term on the ingredient list that is made up of 30 to 50 chemicals on average, but it can have as much as 200 components!
Scent in your after shave balm may be synthetic or natural, like essential oils.
If your skin (or your nose) is sensitive, fragrance is not your best friend. It’s the number one cause of contact allergy to cosmetics. Natural essential oils may cause reactions as well!
But what’s worse, chemicals found in artificial scents include benzene derivatives (carcinogenic), aldehydes, toluene and many other known toxic chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders. And many on the list are known or suspected endocrine disruptors, compounds that tinker with hormonal health that can trigger weight gain and even set you up for diseases decades down the line.
Pregnant and breastfeeding moms and people with chronic illnesses should be especially careful.
CARE BALM is very lightly scented with essential oils of juniper and bergamot. High quality, 100% pure essential oils are way more costly than synthetic scents, but for good reason. Essential oils are extremely concentrated and maximum allowed quantity in a cosmetic product is just 3%. In NAUDE products, i add essential oils 1% or less.
“Interestingly, people who are heavy users of fake fragrances seem to build up a tolerance to them. But as you give up the dangers of synthetic scents, you’ll likely become less tolerant of them. So many people tell me that after they detox from chemical fragrances, they often feel sick when they walk down the detergent aisle or body spray sections of stores.” /Dr. Josh Axe
