6 Skin care trends that are here to stay.
For a decade now, natural is the way to go. Today, consumers are more than ever interested in and actively self-educated about what they are applying on their skin. Clean, green, and non-toxic will continue to shine!
Clean
Yes, non-toxic everything! It’s a no-brainer that new indie brands create products that they want to use on their own skin. And now corporations are making efforts too, to be more transparent and eco-friendly to meet the needs of a demanding young consumer.
Clean beauty is a term often used for skin-care products that are organic, natural, free of toxic synthetics, pesticides, carcinogens. Brands are getting more and more conscious, personal, and closer to their customers. It’s essential to include a transparent list of ingredients (INCI) with each and every product, so you know what you get.
Clean beauty could also mean that the products are made ethically with food-grade ingredients that haven’t been diluted. It could mean that the products are created in a cruelty-free way that is environmentally-friendly and also produces zero waste.
In summer 2020 no-one wants to wear a strong-smelling synthetic cocktail on their skin!
Waterless
Waterless body care is more trendy than ever. Who wants to pack a full suitcase of all those lotions, moisturisers, hair care on a summer holiday?
Besides travelling light, there are so many reasons to choose a waterless product. It doesn’t only help the planet conserve this depleting resource but waterless skin care tends to be cleaner and more potent!
- Water in cosmetics dilutes the active ingredients which means you actually get less of the useful stuff.
- Water based products need larger packaging, mostly plastic. Even when recycling, it is not sustainable. Plus, you can’t have them all in your hand-luggage.
- Water based skin care needs preservatives, emulsifiers, stabilizers to prolong the shelf life. Preserving a product is not a bad thing, it really makes the water based lotion a safe choice. But why, if you could choose a super nourishing butter bar?
- Waterless products are sustainably packed, or come in a solid form without packaging. Best of them are 100% oils and butters and plant extracts, which means 100% active ingredients.
Plants
Plant based beauty or vegan skincare is the industry’s new obsession. Going back to the roots of using all plant-based remedies for skin care is a growing trend in 2020.
Plants have long been used in skin care by many ancient cultures for their powers and natural abilities to combat different ailments. Just ask your grandmother!
A product made of botanical extracts and oils penetrate skin and actively hydrate, repair and rebuild the protective layers of the skin. Unlike a common belief that oils are pore-clogging and can’t be used on eczema prone or irritated skin, different plant oils could actually improve sensitive skin conditions.
Summer skin is glowing of good health!
Green
A very welcomed shift in the skin care world that is coming on strong is sustainability. Young consumers are rethinking their values and are extremely aware of what they buy.
Upcycling will replace recycling, meaning that consumers are encouraged to repurpose empty jars/tins/bottles to extend their life.
While some large companies have already launched biodegradable versions of packaging, smaller upcoming brands thrive to reduce packaging in general.
Climate change is real, and you don’t want to be a part of it by consuming fossil fuels!
Deodorant
Yes, deodorants are a hit now, and anti-perspirants have no way into our homes and onto our armpits this summer!
With indie-brands taking over the deodorant market, very large personal-care brands have announced their first foray into aluminum-free deodorants too.
Aluminum salts in body care products are linked to breast cancer and other health problems, so it’s very clear that many consumers are interested in body odor-fighting products that don’t contain the ingredient. And to be honest, mainstream deodorants/anti-perspirants don’t quite do the job you’d expect them to do.
Natural deodorant doesn’t plug your sweat glands and limit sweat production. They work by neutrilising the bacteria – you still sweat naturally, but your pits won’t stink.
LOCAL
Buying locally made body care products is not only better for the environment, but better for the local economy!Buying local increases community health and promotes more local wealth. By buying locally produced goods you’re helping to keep local small businesses, creators and makers in their jobs. This results in reduced dependence of imports.
Large corporations end up damaging the local economy by hiking up the rents and drive down the wages. To keep wages and tax closer it is economically better in the long run if communities sourced a large portion of their requirement locally.
